Sequoia Capital

I designed a comprehensive SaaS dashboard for Sequoia Capital to help their venture capital team efficiently manage and monitor investment portfolios. The platform provides mid to senior-level employees with intuitive access to real-time updates, comprehensive data, and analytics for informed investment decisions. The solution features a left-side navigation system with quick access to portfolio tracking, investments, analytics, reports, collaboration tools, and settings. The dashboard displays critical metrics including total portfolio value ($500M), ROI (12%), annual growth (8%), and monthly returns (1.5%), alongside visualizations showing portfolio performance trends, asset allocation by sector, and geographic distribution across regions.

Problem & Business Constraints:

This was a speculative design project created without access to Sequoia Capital's actual tools or detailed requirements. The challenge was to conceptualize an intuitive portfolio tracking dashboard for venture capital professionals based on industry research and assumed user needs. Working primarily from intuition and general VC workflow knowledge, I had to make design decisions without screenshots, user feedback, or specific business constraints. The goal was to demonstrate my ability to design a data-rich financial platform that could streamline portfolio management for investment professionals.

Research, Process & Design:

Research & Insights I developed detailed user personas representing mid to senior-level employees at Sequoia Capital, including an Investment Analyst and Investment Manager, based on research into typical VC roles and responsibilities. I created a comprehensive mind map outlining key features and functionalities required for the dashboard, including portfolio summary, KPIs, visualizations, quick actions, investments, and analytics sections. Design Approach I structured the information architecture with a logical flow across six main tabs: Dashboard for overview and KPIs, Investments for portfolio details and risk assessment, Analytics for performance and trend analysis, Reports for generated summaries, Collaboration for team communication, and Settings for user management. The dashboard features at-a-glance KPIs, visual data representations including performance trends and asset allocation charts, a quick actions panel for generating reports and adding investments, real-time activity feed, performance metrics highlighting top and underperformers with detailed ROI data, and geographic investment distribution showing allocation percentages. I selected appropriate visualization types including bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs to enhance user experience and built a prototype demonstrating user journeys and interactions.

Reflection

This project was an invaluable learning experience that pushed me into an entirely unfamiliar domain. I conducted extensive research into the venture capital industry, investment workflows, and how VC professionals interact with portfolio data. Working without existing tools or detailed requirements challenged me to deeply understand investor needs through secondary research and industry analysis. This project taught me how to quickly adapt to new domains, make informed design decisions with limited information, and present complex financial data in accessible ways. The experience strengthened my ability to work independently, conduct thorough domain research, and design for specialized professional audiences outside my previous experience.
